La existencia: HAY

Para hablar de la existencia (existence) de algo (something) o alguien (someone), no usamos el verbo SER (to be). Usamos el verbo HAY (there is/there are).

HAY = there is
HAY = there are

¡Atención!

1. After HAY you will never find a definite article (el, la, los, las). You can ONLY find an indefinite article (un, una, unos, unas) or no article at all.

Hay una pizarra en la clase.
There is a blackboard in the classroom.

2. In plural, we do not need to use any article. If we use the indefinite article (unos, unas), we imply that the things or persons were not many.

Hay unos alumnos en la clase.
There are some students in the classroom (just a few).

Hay alumnos en la clase.
There are students in the classroom (we don't know whether there are many students or just a few).
